Merzouga is a small village on the edge of Erg Chebbi, the great Sahara sand dunes in south-eastern Morocco, about 535 km and 9 to 10 hours by road from Marrakech, where couples sleep in luxury desert camps among dunes up to 150 m high.

Key Details

  • Landscape: The Merzouga desert means the golden sand dunes of Erg Chebbi, the classic Sahara picture.
  • Getting there: A long road trip from Marrakech through the Atlas, usually 2 to 3 days with stops, or a domestic flight to Errachidia plus a road transfer.
  • Stay: Luxury desert camps with private tents, en-suite bathrooms in the high-end camps, dinner, music and fire.
  • Best time: Spring and autumn for the mildest weather; summer is very hot, and winter nights are cold.

Where Is Merzouga?

Merzouga is a village in Errachidia Province, in the Drâa-Tafilalet region of south-eastern Morocco, on the western edge of Erg Chebbi and near the Algerian border. If you picture the Sahara desert Morocco is famous for, with smooth golden ridges and a line of camels at sunset, this is the place.

According to Wikipedia, the Erg Chebbi dunes rise up to 150 m above the surrounding rocky plain and cover an area about 28 km from north to south and 5 to 7 km from east to west. That sounds modest on a map. Standing at the foot of the Merzouga desert, with the sand glowing orange at the end of the day, it feels endless.

How does the Merzouga Sahara desert differ from the stone desert near Marrakech? Here is what you travel for:

  • Real sand. Soft, high dunes that change shape and colour through the day, the picture most couples have in mind when they think of the Sahara.
  • A sense of arrival. After the mountains and the gorges, the first sight of the dunes is a moment you share and remember.
  • Time together. You are away from cities and schedules, with nothing to do at dusk except climb a dune and watch the light go.
  • The journey itself. The Atlas, Ouarzazate and the gorges turn the trip into a small adventure rather than a simple transfer.

How Do You Get from Marrakech to Merzouga?

There are two ways to go from Marrakech to Merzouga: by road across the High Atlas, or by domestic flight plus a road transfer. Most couples choose the road, because the scenery is half of the experience.

  • By road. Rome2Rio gives about 535 km and around 9 to 10 hours of driving without stops. The route climbs over the Tizi n’Tichka pass, comes down to Ouarzazate, then runs east through the valleys and the Dades or Todra gorges to the edge of the dunes. Nobody should do that in one go on holiday, so most couples plan 2 to 3 days.
  • By air. The airport for Merzouga is Moulay Ali Cherif Airport in Errachidia. Rome2Rio lists a direct Ryanair flight from Marrakech (about 1 hour, on selected days) and a daily Royal Air Maroc flight from Casablanca (about 1 hour). From Errachidia, Rome2Rio gives about 123 km to Merzouga, just under 2 hours by road. Schedules change with the seasons, so check them for your dates.
  • With a private driver. We organise private transfers with a driver on request, which means you see Merzouga from Marrakech as a couple on holiday, not as two tired people taking turns at the wheel.

Merzouga vs Agafay: Which Desert for Couples?

Merzouga has the big dunes. Agafay, a stone desert, is 40 to 50 minutes from Marrakech and suits short stays. Our Agafay Desert guide explains that option in detail.

The honest test is your calendar. With a week in Morocco and a dream of real dunes, go to Merzouga. With a long weekend in Marrakech, go to Agafay and enjoy your time rather than the road.

When Is the Best Time to Visit Merzouga?

The best time to visit the Merzouga desert is spring or autumn, when the weather is at its mildest. The desert is a place of contrasts in every season, so think about the nights as much as the days.

Things to Do in Merzouga as a Couple

A good day in the Merzouga desert has a simple rhythm: sunrise, slow morning, sunset, dinner, stars. Every Merzouga trip we plan is bespoke, so the organised activities below are extras on quote, and what is possible depends on your camp and your dates.

  • Sunset or sunrise camel ride. The slow way over the Erg Chebbi dunes, and the photo everyone wants.
  • Dinner under the stars. A table set up for two in the sand, away from the other guests when your camp allows it.
  • Stargazing. Walk away from the camp lights after dinner, lie back on the sand and look up.
  • Music around the fire. Drums and songs by the fire are a classic end to a desert evening.
  • 4×4 or quad in the dunes. A faster way to see how far the sand goes, best in the softer light of the morning or late afternoon.
  • Sandboarding. Climbing back up is the hard part, and the laughing is the point.

Luxury Desert Camps in Merzouga: What to Look For

Many places call themselves luxury, so judge the details rather than the word. A luxury camp in Merzouga should give you the comfort of a small hotel with the sand at your door. Before you book a Merzouga luxury desert camp, check these points:

  • Guest ratings. We look for camps rated 8+ on Booking.com, and recent reviews tell you more than the photos do.
  • Your tent. Ask for a private tent with an en-suite bathroom, because simpler camps may have shared facilities.
  • Winter comfort. From December to February, check that your tent has heating and enough blankets.
  • Private dinner set-ups. Ask whether your table can be set apart, as a shared dining tent is a very different evening.
  • The way in. Ask how you reach the camp and where your luggage goes, especially if the last part is by camel.

Celebrate in the Sahara: Proposal, Vow Renewal or Intimate Celebration?

The Merzouga desert suits small, private moments. Here is what we can plan with you:

  • A proposal on the dunes at sunset. Read our ideas for a Sahara desert proposal and how to keep it a surprise.
  • A symbolic vow renewal. Your own words on top of a dune, just the two of you or with the people you love.
  • An intimate celebration. A small group, a private dinner in the sand, and a few days away from everything.

Ceremonies are symbolic, not legal weddings. Merzouga celebrations are bespoke and quoted on request, because the cost depends on the number of nights, the camp, the transfers and the extras you choose. For a ready-made route, our Marrakech & Sahara Honeymoon is an 8-day private journey with a night in the Merzouga dunes.

For a shorter trip, our Agafay experiences start from €1,200 for two for proposals, with a hidden photographer and a candlelit dinner, and from €1,200 for two for vow renewals. We also offer intimate desert wedding packages in Agafay, and our Morocco destination wedding guide compares both deserts. Travelling in December? See our Christmas and New Year evenings in the desert.

Flights from across Europe and the UK are quoted separately on request, with 2 to 4 hours by direct flight to Marrakech from most European cities. Flights from the USA usually include one connection. What to Pack for the Sahara

The Merzouga desert asks you to pack light but for two climates, because a warm afternoon on the dunes can turn into a cold evening at the camp. Here is what you will actually use:

  • Layers. Thin tops you can add to or take off as the light changes.
  • Warm clothes for the nights. A fleece or warm jacket, and more than that in winter.
  • Sun protection. A hat, sunglasses and sunscreen, whatever the month.
  • A scarf. It keeps sand and wind off your face, and it looks good in the photos.
  • Closed shoes for the sand. Sand gets hot in the sun and cold at night, so bare feet are for the gentle hours only.

Sample Itinerary: 3 Days from Marrakech to Merzouga

This is a typical route, not a fixed package. We adapt the pace, the stops and the nights to your trip.

  • Day 1: the Atlas and Ouarzazate. Leave Marrakech in the morning, cross the Tizi n’Tichka pass and stop around Ouarzazate for the night.
  • Day 2: the gorges and the dunes. Follow the valley east, stop at the Dades or Todra gorges, and arrive at the Erg Chebbi dunes in time for sunset and your first night in the Merzouga desert.
  • Day 3: sunrise, then onward. Watch the sun come up over the sand, then begin the long drive back to Marrakech or continue north to Fes. A second night at the camp makes the morning far less rushed.
