What Is the Agafay Desert?
The Agafay Desert is a stone desert in Morocco, on the high plateau just south-west of Marrakech. Instead of sand, you find bare rolling hills and flat plateaus of rock and dry earth, in shades of beige, pink and gold that change with the light. On a clear day the Atlas Mountains line the horizon.

Let’s be honest about one thing: there are no big sand dunes here. If you picture the tall golden dunes of the Sahara, Agafay is not that place. What it gives you instead is space, silence and huge views, very close to a major city. For couples with only a few days in Marrakech, that is usually the better deal.
Is it worth it? Here is what makes the difference:
- It feels remote. Once you reach the camp, the city disappears and all you see are hills and mountains.
- It is quiet. There is little traffic and little noise, which suits a romantic evening better than a busy rooftop in the medina.
- The sky is dark. The Agafay Desert at night is far enough from the city lights for a sky full of stars on a clear evening.
- It is easy. You can leave your riad in the afternoon and be at dinner in the desert by sunset.
How Far Is the Agafay Desert from Marrakech?
The Agafay Desert from Marrakech is about 30 to 40 km by road, around 40 to 50 minutes by car depending on the camp. You leave the city heading south-west, the houses thin out, and the land opens up into stone hills. The camps are spread across the plateau, so the exact time depends on which one you choose and where you start in Marrakech.
- With us. The transfer from your riad or hotel to the camp and back is included in our experiences, in a 4×4, so you have nothing to organise.
- On your own. A taxi or a hire car can take you there, but ask your camp for directions first, because the last part of the road is not always easy to find.
- From abroad. Marrakech is 2 to 4 hours by direct flight from most European cities. From the USA, couples usually connect through Casablanca or a European hub.
Agafay vs Sahara: Which Desert for Couples?
Agafay and the Sahara are very different trips. Agafay is a short escape from Marrakech; the Sahara around Merzouga is a journey in itself. The right choice depends on how many days you have and how much the dunes matter to you.
| Agafay Desert | Sahara (Merzouga) | |
|---|---|---|
| Distance from Marrakech | 40 to 50 minutes by car, depending on the camp | 8 to 9 hours by road |
| Time needed | One evening or one night | A few extra days |
| Dunes | No big dunes: rolling stone hills and plateaus | High sand dunes |
| Comfort | Luxury camps, close to the city and easy to reach | Comfortable camps too, after a long journey |
| Best for | A city break, a surprise proposal, a dinner or one night | A longer adventure built around the dunes |
For most couples on a short trip, Agafay is the practical choice: you lose no days on the road. If high dunes are the dream and you have a few extra days, ceremonies and celebrations in Merzouga are possible on request.
Agafay Desert Weather and Best Time to Visit
The best time to visit Agafay is October to April, when the weather is at its mildest. Marrakech has 300+ days of sunshine a year, so the real question is how warm you want the days and how cold you can accept the nights. Evenings are cooler in the desert than in the city, whatever the season.
| Season | Days | Evenings and nights | Sunset in Marrakech |
|---|---|---|---|
| Spring (March to May) | Warm and sunny | Mild, with a cool breeze | About 7:00 pm in mid-April |
| Summer (June to August) | Very hot | Warm; plans start at sunset | About 7:40 pm in mid-July |
| Autumn (September to November) | Warm, getting milder from October | Mild, cooling through the season | About 6:00 pm in mid-October |
| Winter (December to February) | Mild and sunny | Cold; our camps are heated | About 5:50 pm in mid-January |
Sunset times are for Marrakech, from timeanddate.com. Plan to reach your camp at least an hour before sunset, so you see the hills change colour.
Things to Do in the Agafay Desert as a Couple
There are plenty of things to do in Agafay Desert for a couple, but the best evenings stay simple. What is included depends on the experience you book, so each item below says how it works with us. Anything marked on quote can be added to your plan.

- Sunset camel ride. The classic Agafay moment, and a camel ride is included in our proposal, vow renewal and wedding packages.
- Sunset 4×4 excursion. A drive through the hills at golden hour, included in our proposals and weddings.
- Quad or buggy. A more energetic way to explore the plateau, available on quote.
- Dinner under the stars. A private candlelit dinner is the heart of the evening, and dinner is included in our proposals, vow renewals and weddings.
- Stargazing. Nothing to book: step away from the lanterns after dinner and look up.
- Sunrise hot-air balloon. A flight over the desert the next morning, on request and on quote.
- Music and fire. Live music is included in our wedding packages and on quote for proposals and vow renewals; fire shows are on quote.
Luxury Camps in Agafay: What to Look For
Not every Agafay desert camp offers the same experience, and photos alone will not tell you much. Before you book a luxury camp in Agafay, check these points:

- Recent guest ratings. We only send couples hand-picked camps rated 8+ on Booking.com, so start from that level.
- Winter comfort. From December to February, ask for heating in the tent, blankets and a fire outside.
- A private dinner. Check that your table is set apart, because a shared dining tent is a very different evening.
- The transfer. Confirm whether the trip from your riad or hotel and back is part of the price.
- The view. Ask what you will see at sunset, and whether the Atlas Mountains are visible from your setting.
- Privacy. A private setting at a camp is not the same as having the whole camp; a private camp buyout depends on the camp and is on quote.
Morocco Luxury Events works with a network of 20+ luxury camps and palace hotels. Our starting prices are based on a premium desert camp, and a luxury camp upgrade is available on quote. After your request, we send you a choice of camps with options, and you decide.
Day Trip or Overnight?
Both work, and the choice comes down to how much time you have and whether you want to see the night sky properly.
- Sunset and dinner. Leave Marrakech in the afternoon, watch the sun go down, have dinner and return to your riad or hotel the same night.
- One night at a camp. Stay for the stars, wake up to the silence and watch the first light on the hills, with no drive back after dinner.

If you can spare one night, we recommend it. The Agafay Desert at night is the part most couples remember, and a morning at the camp also makes a sunrise balloon flight easy to add. If your trip is short, a sunset dinner still gives you the essential experience, without changing hotels.
What to Wear in the Agafay Desert
Dress in layers. The temperature drops quickly once the sun goes down, and the desert is cooler than the city.
- By day. Light, breathable clothes, sunglasses and a hat, even in winter.
- At sunset. A shawl or a light jacket that goes with your outfit, because you will want it in the photos too.
- On winter nights. A proper warm coat from December to February, as nights are cold.
- On your feet. Flat, closed shoes, because the ground is stony and heels sink or twist.
- For the camel ride. Trousers or a long, loose skirt that lets you sit comfortably.
